The Vignerons Indépendants is an association of winemakers who make and sell wine made from their own grape harvest. They are thus responsible for the whole of the production and marketing processes from the vine to the consumer.
Other producers sell their grapes or their young wine to wholesalers (Négotiants), who bottle and market the wine, usually under their own brand names, without reference to the properties where the grapes were grown or the wine made. Coopérateurs are grape farmers who do not make wine but are contracted to take their grape harvest to a wine cooperative, who will make and market the wine.
The objectives of the Vignerons Indépendants are to provide assistance and services locally to its members and to foster a community of wine growers. Nationally, its main function is to lobby government over the many legislative and regulatory matters affecting wine.
In most areas, the majority of the more go-ahead and competent winemakers belong to the Vignerons Indépendants. As well as being a support and forum for us producers, it provides confidence to customers that the wine will be of high quality. An independant producer provides complete traceability - everything is done under his direct control.
